Equipment

  • 1 Large Mixing Bowl
  • 2 round baking pans

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups bread flour
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons cornmeal
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons quick yeast
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 3/4 cups slightly warmed milk
  • 1 teaspoon regular vinegar
  • 1/4 cup slightly warm water

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine the bread flour, cornmeal, salt, baking powder, quick yeast, and sugar. Mix well.
  • Add the melted butter to the warm milk and stir until combined. Then, add this mixture along with the warm water and vinegar to the dry ingredients. Mix until a sticky dough forms.
  • Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, or until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.
  • Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
  • Once the dough has risen, gently punch down the dough to release any air bubbles and cut the ball in half. Shape each ball into a nice flat round loaf that will fit in a 9' round cake pan.
  • Cover the loaves with the cloth again and allow them to rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) about 20 minutes before the dough finishes rising.
  • Bake each bread loaf for approximately 20 - 30 minutes or until it has a nice golden crisp color and look on top.
  • Remove the sandwich buns from the oven and allow them to cool for about 5 minutes.
  • Now slice them in half and layer your favorite meats, cheeses, olives, veggies, and dressings for the best sourdough sandwich at home.

Notes

This recipe makes two of the large size sandwich buns, which can be cut in half to split one bun between two people. So if you half them, they will be enough to make sandwiches for four people.
