Starting a Fruit & Vegetable Garden: Stocking Up on Seeds for a Sustainable Garden
If you’re dreaming of growing your own fruits and vegetables and creating a sustainable garden, gathering the right seeds is a crucial first step! I’m Stacy, founder of Sincere Scribbles Southern Blog, and I’m excited to share my journey toward self-sufficiency as I stock up on seeds for a backyard fruit orchard and a sustainable garden.
Building the Foundation for a Sustainable Garden
In recent years, I’ve been focused on developing a self-sustaining homestead, growing my own food as part of a sustainable garden. So far, I’ve planted:
- A Blackberry Bush
- Two Purple Grapevines
- A Small Strawberry Patch
Since the back of my property is still being prepared, these plants are thriving in my front yard. The long-term plan includes moving them to the back as I transform it into a dedicated space for a sustainable fruit orchard and vegetable garden. One of my favorite new projects is my avocado tree, which I started from a seed using the toothpick-in-water method. It’s rooted, potted, and growing well!
I also found a fig tree on clearance at Lowe’s recently. After repotting, it’s already tripled in size! I plan to bring these plants indoors during colder months, using grow lights to keep them healthy.
Stocking Up on Seeds for My Sustainable Garden
My goal is to cultivate as much fresh food as possible, so I’ve been ordering seeds to prepare for an abundant sustainable garden and orchard. Here’s a peek at what I’ve added to my growing seed stockpile:
Fruits & Nuts
- Black Bamboo, Sugarcane, Orange Watermelons, Elderberries
- Yellow Raspberries, Litchis, Pecan Trees, Olive Trees
- Pomelos, Gooseberries, Rainier Cherries, Blood Oranges
- Rainbow Pears, Dragon Fruit, and more
Vegetables
- Broccolini, Artichokes, Rainbow Carrots
- Yellow Sweet Potatoes, Purple Cauliflower
- Heirloom Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Celery
- Leafy Greens: Kale, Collard Greens, Mustard Greens, and Turnip Greens
I found an incredible deal on Amazon—25 packs of vegetable seeds for only $5.99, making it about $0.24 per pack! Stocking up on a wide variety of seeds ensures that I’m prepared for any situation, whether it’s food shortages or the natural growing needs of a sustainable garden.
Organizing Seeds for a Successful Garden
Keeping seeds organized is essential for managing a sustainable garden efficiently. I recently ordered some seed organizing boxes from Amazon, which have been a game-changer in managing my collection. (I’ll share the link at the end of this post if you’re interested.)
Top Sources for Building a Sustainable Garden Seed Collection
Finding quality seeds at affordable prices has been a rewarding part of my sustainable garden journey. Here are my favorite sources:
- Amazon – Great deals on bulk packs, especially for vegetables
- Ebay, Etsy, and Walmart – Competitive pricing and variety
- Tractor Supply – Ideal for fruit and nut trees
- Burpee Gardening Catalog – A classic source for premium seeds
These sources have allowed me to build my sustainable garden without breaking the bank.
Looking Ahead: A Vision for a Self-Sustaining Garden
In 2025, I’ll be clearing the back of my property to make way for a fruit orchard and half-underground greenhouse gardens. With the seeds I’ve gathered, I’m excited to expand my sustainable garden and grow a wider variety of produce, contributing to a more self-sufficient lifestyle.
Stay tuned for updates as I continue this journey toward a sustainable garden and share more tips for gardening, homesteading, and self-sufficiency!
