The Misery of Living With Ulcerative Colitis

Living with Ulcerative Colitis is an ongoing challenge that affects every aspect of my life. From the moment I wake up, my body reminds me of the constant struggle I face. In this blog post, I will share a glimpse into my daily life, shedding light on the pain, discomfort, and coping strategies that have become a part of my routine.

Waking up each morning, my mind slowly registers that a new day has begun. But as soon as I open my eyes, my stomach begins its familiar routine. It’s a painful reminder that I am living with Ulcerative Colitis, a condition that affects every aspect of my daily life.

Living with Ulcerative Colitis is Very Hard

The first half of my day is spent in the bathroom, dealing with discomfort and pain. It’s a constant struggle, as my stomach hurts and I feel helpless. The frustration and isolation can be overwhelming at times. It’s challenging to find the support I need and the right help for this condition.

Unfortunately, seeking medical assistance hasn’t been easy either. Doctors seem to be giving me the runaround, prescribing medications that offer little relief. It can be disheartening when you’re desperately seeking answers and solutions, only to feel like you’re being tossed from one ineffective treatment to another.

Living With Ulcerative Colitis Is Exhausting Mentally

Feeling alone in this journey is a common sentiment among individuals coping with Ulcerative Colitis. The lack of understanding from friends and family can add to the emotional burden we already carry. But it’s important to remember that you are not alone.

1. The Morning Battle:

As soon as I awaken, my stomach reminds me of the ongoing battle within. The pain and urgency have become an unwelcome alarm clock, signaling the start of a challenging day. Every morning, I find myself spending the first half of my day in the bathroom, desperately trying to find relief.

2. Coping with Pain and Discomfort:

The constant urge to use the restroom becomes a relentless companion throughout the day. The cramps in my stomach make it difficult to concentrate on anything else. The discomfort is real and cannot be ignored. However, I have discovered a few strategies that bring some relief.

3. Hot Water Therapy:

One of my go-to methods for easing the pain is immersing myself in a bathtub filled with steaming hot water. The soothing heat helps to calm my inflamed gut and provides temporary respite from the discomfort. Spending hours in the tub may seem excessive, but for me, it has become an essential part of my daily routine.

4. The Need for Patience:

Living with Ulcerative Colitis requires immense patience and understanding. It is crucial to remember that each day brings new challenges, and there will be good days as well as bad days. Keeping a journal to track symptoms, triggers, and patterns has helped me gain a better understanding of my condition, enabling me to make informed decisions regarding my health.

5. Seeking Support Has Been Very Hard:

Living with this chronic condition can feel isolating, and finding support from others who understand what I’m going through has been hard. Noone else is experiencing the pain and discomfort, so they just don’t understand how I feel or what I’m truly going through. I feel like nobody truly understands what I’m going through daily. The feeling of isolation can be overwhelming, making it difficult to find the support that I need. Some days I really feel like throwing in the towel and giving up. I do not know how much longer I can maintain living with this pain and misery.

6. Adjusting Daily Activities:

Ulcerative Colitis forces me to adapt and make adjustments to my daily activities. It’s essential to listen to my body’s signals and recognize when I need to rest or take breaks during the day. Planning ahead and being mindful of potential triggers such as certain foods or stressful situations has become second nature. While it may feel limiting at times, these adjustments are necessary for managing my symptoms and maintaining a semblance of normalcy.
