• Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth: Don’t leave the water running the whole time you’re brushing. Only turn it on when you’re ready to rinse.
• Reduce shower water waste: Turn off the shower while you’re lathering up your body or washing your hair. Turn it back on only when you’re ready to rinse.
• Save water when washing dishes: Instead of letting the water run continuously, fill one side of the sink with soapy water and the other with clean water for rinsing. This method saves a lot of water compared to running the tap non-stop.

Rainwater Harvesting for Homesteads for Water Conservation

For those of us on a homestead journey, rainwater harvesting can be a game-changer. It not only helps conserve precious water but also cuts down on your water bill if you’re on city or rural water systems. Even if you have a creek on your property, you can save rainwater for other uses, like watering your garden or greenhouse.

A simple way to get started is by building homemade rain barrels. These are incredibly easy and cost-effective to set up. Here’s what you’ll need:

• Heavy-duty trash cans: These will serve as your barrels to collect the rainwater.
• Rain barrel mesh covers: These can be found cheaply online (like on Temu) and help keep debris, leaves, and pests out of your water.
• Rain barrel spouts: Attach these to the side of the trash cans for easy access to the water once it’s collected.

Building your own rain barrels is far more affordable than buying the pre-made versions, and they work just as well!
